Week of May 14th, 2012Dear First Grade Families,
Monday, May 14th is a Spirit Wear Day!
We are ready to plant our cuttings from science, and so are in need of planters. We took cuttings from a German ivy plant and a philodendron. Any small pot will do. If you have one or two pots you could spare, please send them to school this week. The children are anxious to bring the plants home. In science we learned that new plants grow not only from seeds, but also cuttings, stems, and bulbs. You can also look forward to an onion bulb coming this week. We did not have success with our potato plants.
As always during the month of May, K-2 will pray a decade of the rosary daily. Your child may bring a personal rosary to use but it is not necessary. I have a classroom set of rosaries available.
We will continue doing the quickie quizzes on Math facts through the end of the year. Students move at their own pace. A quiz is passed when 27 out of 30 problems are answered correctly within the 75 second time limit. When a student has passed the addition set of problems with sums to 10, they progress to subtraction.
Looking ahead: May 17th we will be attending the band concert at 1:00. May 21st is the K-2 field trip to the Nature Center. Students will need a cold lunch and beverage that day. We will be eating at the Nature Center. May 23rd is an All-School Mass prepared by the 2nd graders. There is no school on Monday, May 28th, Memorial Day. June 7th is Fun and Field Day. It is out last day of school.
